Reflections on the Rule of St. Benedict

St. Benedict's teachings help us live the Gospel with each other and the world around us. Our Benedictine values come from the Rule of St. Benedict:
  • Listening: To attend keenly and sensitively to the voices of all God's creation.
Listen with the ear of your heart. RB: Prologue

  • Awareness of God: To seek God in the ordinary events of everyday life.
We believe that the divine presence is everywhere ... RB: 19

  • Community Living: To become who we are through our relationships with others.
Your way of acting should be different from the world's way; the love of Christ must come before all else. ... Never give a hollow greeting of peace or turn away when someone needs your love. RB: 4

  • Respect for Others: To respect each person regardless of distinction.
Great care and concern are to be shown in receiving poor people and pilgrims, because in them more particularly Christ is received; our very awe of the rich guarantees them special respect. RB: 53

  • Hospitality: To offer warmth, tolerance and joy when welcoming others.
All guests ... are to be welcomed as Christ. RB: 53

  • Dignity of Work: To appreciate the value of work as a share in God's creation.
The workshop where we are to toil faithfully at all these tasks is the enclosure of the monastery and stability in the community. RB: 4

  • Stewardship: To appreciate and care lovingly for all God's creation.
Regard all utensils as if they were the sacred vessels of the altar. RB: 31

  • Moderation: To be content with living simply and with finding balance in work, prayer and leisure.
All things are to be done with moderation. RB: 48

  • Stability: To cultivate rootedness and a shared sense of mission.
To stand firm in one's promises. RB: 58

  • Justice: To work toward justice within the monastery and the larger society.
... that in all things God may be glorified. RB: 57

  • Peace: To strive for peace within our hearts, with our neighbors, and with God.
Let peace be your quest and aim. RB: Prologue
