Last week I spent 2 1/2 days out of my classroom preparing, organizing and uploading information needed for an upcoming AdvancED accreditation visit. There are 7 areas in which we had to evaluate ourselves as a school, as well as gather evidence that supports our accreditation. It really has helped us see what we do well, and identify some things we can improve on.
Although it has been an interesting process and I have been glad to help, it was hard to be in the same building and not be with my students. It was hard for my students to know I was in the building but not with them, too!
In fact, we had to have a talk about this. I told them that this was something I had to do. I said that I would rather be with them, but that there are times in our lives that we have to do things, even if we would rather be doing something else.
After the children asked questions and shared their feelings, I suggested we pray to Jesus to help us understand why sometimes we need to do the things we prefer not to do. We prayed to accept things we can’t change, even when we don’t like them. We prayed to love learning from everything we experience, even when other things seem more fun or interesting.
This was a good lesson for the students, and a good reminder for me too!
